Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) for Health Care Professionals-
Lucy Schwabe
As clinicians we know how the stresses in our lives can impact on our ability to care for our own health and well-being and so distract us from the capacity to be available to help others. The course schedule consists of eight weekly sessions and is oriented towards healthcare professionals who wish to experience MBSR approaches directly. The course provides an opportunity to pause, recuperate and experience supportive practices taught in MBSR.
Orientation Session:
A free of charge introductory session will be offered prior to the start of the course to provide you with a first-hand taste of mindfulness, an opportunity to better understand the course and a chance to meet the trainer.
About Mindfulness and MBSR
Mindfulness is a way of learning to relate directly to whatever is happening in the present moment without judging or criticizing yourself, others or your experience.MBSR is the oldest and largest academic medical center-based mindfulness based programme developed by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn and his associates at the University of Massachusetts in 1979. It was developed as a way of helping patients, their doctors and other healthcare providers to face stress, illness and pain beyond medical treatment. It is a proven educational complement to medical care and therapy. Tens of thousands of people have taken an MBSR course. Many are referred by their doctor or therapist while health care providers often attend the course as well.
Over two decades of published research indicates that the practice of MBSR has been linked to:
- an ability to manage both short- and long-term stressful situations more efficiently
- an increased ability to relax
- an enhanced immune function
- greater energy and enthusiasm for life
- improvements of physical and psychological well-being
- increases in positive affect and self-compassion
